JOB SUMMARY:

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for promoting and ensuring the health and safety of personnel as well as assisting in creating, updating, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring our Corporate Safety Programs to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and health regulations. This individual has a comprehensive knowledge of day to day field operations including OSHA and environmental regulations, work methods, and coordinating training and meetings in a pro-active interdependent manner. The Safety Coordinator serves as the company’s point of contact for safety with employees, contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with the staff in Human Resources and Management to deliver safety and health initiatives in a manner that will lead culture change throughout the organization
  • Provides technical safety and health support and information to warehouse, production, and administrative personnel
  • Prepares written safety and health programs and policies within CAL OSHA and Federal safety standards and regulations considered
  • Identifies company safety training needs and develops and coordinates safety training programs
  • Supports administrative/shop staff to implement controls to minimize safety and occupational hazards
  • Supports shop, production, and warehouse personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Educate employees on safety standards and expectations as well as safe machinery operation
  • Maintains company safety library (e.g. videos, regulations, references, policies, safety records)
  • Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents and related events
  • Advises of any regulatory changes in which must be complied. Sufficient advance notice should be provided so that compliance on the effective date is ensured
  • Audits practices and records kept to ensure compliance with company policies and federal/state/CAL OSHA occupational safety and health regulations
  • Monitors employees compliance with safety regulations and policies
  • Reports any issues or failure to comply to Executive Management and the Manager of the department in question
  • Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace
  • Work with HR to set up a new employee on-boarding process for safety
  • Manage new hire safety orientation program and provide ongoing job specific safety training
  • Perform daily site safety and equipment inspections
  • Reports daily/weekly on site safety inspections and equipment findings
  • Assists in developing, maintaining and reporting on a monthly/annual Company Safety Scorecard
  • Facilitate mass safety meetings and required daily and weekly tailgate safety meetings
  • Compile materials for safety meetings, prepare agendas, and record meeting minutes
  • Once HR has interfaced, consulted and communicated with employees, medical professionals, insurance professionals the Safety Coordinator will assist and facilitate BendPak Inc.’s “return to work program” 
  • Assist HR department in worker’s compensation reporting, case management, and recordkeeping and participate in BendPak Inc.’s claims management process
  • Investigate and analyze bodily injury and property damage accidents
  • Participate in fact finding causal analysis for injury/incident/property damage investigations and prepare accident, violation, near-miss, and injury reports
  • Provide updated information to employees regarding safety requirements update or change
  • Conduct risk assessments and assist in the enforcement of preventative measures
  • Oversee workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees' safety

REQUIREMENTS AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor's degree in health and safety or a related field may be preferred
  • 5 years of experience in safety or safety related field
  • Ability to recognize and analyze Company trends with respect to Company accidents
  • Ability to recognize training needs and develop training in safety
  • Extensive working knowledge of federal, state and city safety requirements, including OSHA regulations and ET&D Best Practices
  • Advanced Safety/Industrial Hygiene Certifications (CUSP, CSP, ASP, CIH, OHST, or CHST) preferred
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies and other safety and health professionals
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills with the ability to use MS Office with proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and auditor safety software
  • Effectively manages problem prevention strategies to limit reactionary practices
  • Ensures safety goals and expectations are realistic, achievable, and revisited/revised at appropriate times
  • Clearly defines goals, understands audiences, manages productive meetings, and builds team morale
  • Presentation skills with the ability to address an audience of various sizes and effectively communicate his/her message and ideas
  • Ability to write clear and concise thoughts in a professional manner
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time while meeting deadlines
  • Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and managers

Requires the ability to work independently with minimal guidance on safety and health issues and program implementation
